Fall 2009

Report of the Reunion

by Margo Clouse

(Glen, Eugene, JMF, WFJ)

The William J. Flake family reunion was held Friday 17 July 2009. It started with the Rodeo at 9:00 at the Snowflake Rodeo Grounds.I sure miss the old grandstand where we canmingle together as a group, rather than under individual family shade. To me, it just isn’t the same—but I love the Flake Reunion and Rodeo, so I will continue to come and enjoy it.

Five of Jake Flake’s daughters & Jed Flake’s daughter Vicki challenged each other in the Women’s Keg Race. While mounting her horse, Mindy Sanders toppled off landing on her neck. It sure gave us a scare. For those of you wondering how she’s doing Mindy shares this account: “Thank you so much for all of your prayers and concern on my behalf. As many of you know I took a spill off a horse during the Flake Rodeo. My husband drove me to the hospital in Show Low to get checked out and they found out that I had a broken neck. I was very scared at this point because they strapped me to a board and told me I had to keep completely still or I could be paralyzed or die if my neck moved. I was then flown to the Good Samaritan hospital in Phoenix. They took another CAT scan of my neck and found that my break was stable and it didn’t require surgery. They also took x-rays of my leg and found out that I had a hair-line fracture on my femur. I had to wear a neck-brace 24 hours a day for 6 weeks and after about 2 weeks I was able to walk with a cane. My breaks are healed now, I don’t have to wear a brace anymore and I don’t have to use a cane. I have started physical therapy to regain more movement in my neck, to strengthen my leg, and to get my spine straightened out. I am very blessed that I have been able to heal quickly and that people were willing to help me out. I am thankful to my mom who helped so much until I was able to move around and for my family who upon hearing that my neck was broken immediately knelt down and prayed for a miracle in my behalf. I know things could have been way worse and that it is a miracle that I probably will have a complete recovery.” -Mindy Flake Sanders (Jake, Virgil, James M., William J.)

The Potluck lunch was held on the lawn between the WJF & JMF homes. A big crowd showed up and there was lots of food and visiting. Crystal Petersen says that she has 2 large serving spoons left from the Potluck if anyone is missing them contact her at: (928) 536-4480.

Afterwards we met at the Main Street Cultural Hall for a program and talent show. Michael Boone shared with us a feature he has discovered via the Internet—The Liahona Elders Journal. He pointed out to us that he has researched many family members from years gone by. I came home and looked it up and was amazed at what can be found on that wonderful site: www. familyhistory archives.byu.edu under browse choose: Liahona Elders Journals. Check it out!
